UK Travel - Places To Stay In London

Author: Mark Walters

London is a city filled with rich history and places to explore. If you are going to be taking a trip to London, then you should consider staying in one of these areas...

The West End - This is London's theater district, so you will be close to all the great shows as well as some of the best attractions, including the Globe Theater (home to Shakespeare in his day), Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, Leicester Square and the London Zoo.  The West End is a popular tourist destination with load of vacationers frequenting it. With so much tourist attention the West End is consequently full of hotels to meet your needs and budget. The boundaries of the West End are set by four important London roads - The Strand along the southern end, Oxford Street along the north, Regent Street to the west and Kingsway to the east.

Bayswater / Paddington - Though most visitors probably think first of Paddington station (and Paddington bear), Bayswater and nearby Paddington are mostly residential areas that have become increasingly popular with tourists. What is nice about this location is that most of the hotels in the area were once private residences that have been turned into hotels. They create a comfy and homey ambiance. Bayswater has an impressive array of mass transit options which can take you to almost anywhere including many city centre locations. Film buffs might be interested to know that "Notting Hill" with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts was set in one of the more well-heeled and popular sections of Bayswater. Every Saturday the world famous Portobello Road Antique Market takes place here, so keep that in mind if you would like to see it.

Kensington - The place to stay if you do not want to pay for the high cost of a hotel in the city centre, but still want access to all the sites. Kensington has many of its own green areas such as parks and gardens, but it is also connected to mass transit so you can go to anywhere you would like. Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana lived, is also naturally in Kensington. This is a sophisticated and cultured piece of London, and the hotels in this area will provide you with an equally civilized place to stay. If you are looking to be spoiled, this is definitely the spot for you.

Westminster - If you like history, then you should consider staying in Westminster. Westminster is home to the Palace of Westminster, the building in which parliament sits. There are several things to see in Westminster squares other than the palace of Westminster such as Big Ben, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. Near to Westminster Square is Buckingham Palace, the place where Queen Elizabeth II lives. Here is where you can catch the wonderful "Changing of the Guard" which happens before noon every single day. You can also find Downing Street in this District. Westminster is very connected with the London subway known as the 'tube' and has many hotels that you could book a stay in!
